Passing the Pearson Test of English (PTE) can seem like a big, scary task. But, it’s actually more simple than it seems! All you need to do to pass the test is break it down into parts, put in the time to study, and go into your exam with confidence.

For the oral fluency and pronunciation part of the test, the best thing to do is relax. This is where many non-native English speakers get nervous. The spoken part of the exam puts your accent to the test and makes you have to think fast.

To better prepare for it, use these tips on how to improve oral fluency and pronunciation in PTE.

1. Do Tongue Twisters While Practicing

Tongue twisters are phrases of words that all have the same starting sound.

Some common ones include:

  • “She sold seashells by the seashore.”
  • “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.”
  • “Betty Botter bought some butter.”

These sentences are harder than most common English phrases. They’re called tongue twisters because they’re meant to make a person trip on their words. The better you get at saying these phrases, though, the more your pronunciation for the PTE improves!

2. Work on Your Pace

Another way to improve your oral fluency and pronunciation score is to work on your pace. Your pace is how fast you say all the words in a sentence.

It’s not good to start fast then slow down, pause, and go fast again. You don’t want to start slow than rush the end of your sentence, either. The best thing to do is keep a steady pace throughout.

Focus on this as you’re speaking with others to practice. Notice how you stop and think at certain parts or if you go back and start a sentence over at all. Such habits can lower your score; you want to fix them now before you go into your exam.

3. Listen to More Spoken English

If you’re not sure what a good pace is when speaking English, listen to more native English speakers in conversation. Watch English television with your native language as subtitles. Listen to English radio stations and notice how the conversation flows between radio hosts.

Learn from these resources then apply what you’ve heard when practicing. Ask someone to speak English with you, and try to speak English every single day. This will make you much more comfortable with pace and pronunciation.

As great as these tips are, they only work when you apply them. You have to commit to studying for the PTE and be willing to learn from others before you take your exam.
