English is one of the hardest languages to learn in the world. Even if you know how to speak it, you may not feel confident because of how frustrating it can be to understand.

Having confidence while speaking English is important. You don’t want to be taking frequent breaks in sentences or speak too slowly. This can make communicating with other English speakers very difficult.

As with any new task or activity, practice makes perfect–or at least as close to perfect you can get.

In this blog, we’ll discuss how to speak English confidently so you can effectively communicate with other people.

Tips on How to Speak English Confidently

Simply learning grammar and vocabulary isn’t going to be enough if you want to know how to speak English confidently.

Here are three tips to help improve your English-speaking ability.

1. Read a Book out Loud

Writing out vocab and occasionally practicing conversational English can be helpful. But you’re going to need a lot more verbal practice to improve your speaking.

Odds are, you’re not going to find someone who will sit down with you for hours to help you speak English. Instead, pick up a nice big English book and just start reading out loud to yourself.

Hearing yourself sound words out can help you realize mistakes that you’ve been making. It will also give you the chance to say words you may not have had practice with yet.

You can read the book at different paces and alternate the volume you speak in. One paragraph you can speak in a more conversational tone, and the next you can read aloud as if you’re giving a speech.

2. It’s Okay to Make Mistakes

Anyone who is learning to speak a new language fluently is bound to make mistakes. It’s important to not shy away from these mistakes because it will hold you back from sounding confident.

If you are constantly over-cautious with your word choice and placement, you will speak slowly and never sounds like a fluent speaker. It’s better to speak with confidence and make mistakes sometimes than to always be cautious about everything you’re saying.

It’s helpful to have friends or acquaintances who will always point out when you make a grammatical mistake. If you don’t have people correcting you, it’ll be difficult to learn from your mistakes.

3. Believe in Yourself

Believing in yourself is so important because as with any new thing you try, you’ll never succeed if you don’t have confidence. Even after you make mistakes, you need to accept these mistakes as stepping stones to success.

Remind yourself every day that you are one step closer to being able to confidently speak English.

When you’re having a particularly rough day, think back to when you first started learning the language. You have already made so much progress, and you will continue to make progress regardless of mistakes.

If a particular word or phrase is causing you trouble, don’t give up. Practice it more often until you master it. Not only will you become a better English speaker, but you’ll feel more confident about yourself.
